Vegetarisch hondenvoer voor een oudere hond: 5 vragen beantwoord

Vegetarian dog food for a senior dog: 5 questions answered

Are you wondering if vegetarian dog food is sufficient for an older dog? The short answer: if the food has been tested according to FEDIAF nutritional standards, it meets the same requirements as food containing meat, even for seniors. Many owners think that an older dog needs less, or perhaps much more, protein, but that is more nuanced. This FAQ is for anyone with an older dog who is considering switching to vegetarian food and wants to know what to look out for. Note: vegetarian dog food from VerdaDog is always 100% vegan as well and meets FEDIAF nutritional standards.

Is vegetarian dog food enough for an older dog?

Yes, if the food has been tested according to FEDIAF nutritional standards, it contains all the nutrients an older dog needs, just as food with meat does. A comparative study of commercial dog foods showed that the protein content of senior food was not on average lower than that of regular adult food; for some brands, it was even higher (German et al., 2025). The idea that an older dog necessarily needs less protein is therefore not simply true. It is more important that the food is complete and balanced, regardless of whether the proteins come from meat or a plant-based source.

Does an older dog have different nutritional needs than a young adult dog?

As a dog ages, its energy requirements may decrease, for example, because it moves less due to joint problems (FEDIAF, 2018). Research into commercial dog foods shows that senior diets on average contain slightly lower energy density and slightly less fat than adult diets, and often slightly more fiber, although the latter difference was not significant in all cases (German et al., 2025). The researchers emphasize that it is best to look at the nutritional values of a specific food and at your own dog, rather than relying solely on age.

Does my older dog get enough protein from vegetarian food?

Yes, provided the food contains enough high-quality protein and has been tested for completeness; this also applies to food containing meat. Plant-based proteins are sometimes digested slightly differently than animal proteins, but in a well-formulated food, they can perfectly meet your dog's protein needs. If you are unsure whether that is enough for your dog, for example, because he is extra active or eats very little, consult your veterinarian.

Should I switch to vegetarian food if my dog is already a bit older?

You can, but build up the switch extra slowly for an older dog. Follow the transition schedule on the product page for the kibble, in which you gradually increase the proportion of new food over about fourteen days; on our frequently asked questions page, you can also read a general outline of how such a transition works. If your dog has a sensitive digestive system, feel free to take a little more time. If you are unsure whether a switch is wise due to your dog's health, for example, during ongoing treatment, discuss this with your veterinarian first. We do not provide veterinary advice ourselves, but we are happy to share thoughts on the composition of the food.

What should I look for when choosing vegetarian dog food for my older dog?

Make sure the food is complete according to FEDIAF standards, is suitable for adult dogs of all breeds and sizes, and matches your dog's life stage in terms of fiber and energy. A puppy needs different kibble than an adult dog because different nutritional needs apply during growth; therefore, always choose food that fits your dog's life stage. With vegetarian food, also ensure it is truly free of all animal ingredients: all VerdaDog products are, for example, 100% vegan, so they are also free of dairy and egg. At Team VerdaDog, we often hear that older dogs in particular can be a bit pickier, so a slow transition that takes a little longer often helps.

The Story Behind VerdaDog

As a child, I grew up with Luuk, a very sweet Labrador. At some point, he started experiencing more and more physical problems: itching, red skin, dandruff, and obesity. Even then, I wished things could be different.

Years later, I adopted a dog myself: Sep, my Golden Retriever. From that moment on, it became my mission to help him live as long and healthy as possible, and to prevent as many of the issues I saw Luuk develop.

I myself have been eating a fully plant-based diet for over 10 years and experience the benefits daily. I wanted Sep to also enjoy that experience. This is how VerdaDog came to be: from the simple desire to do the best for my own dog.
