Sustainability at VerdaDog
At VerdaDog, we think beyond just your dog's health. We believe that good nutrition should also be good for the world your dog grows up in. From the ingredients we choose to the packaging your order arrives in. We try to do all of this as sustainably as possible.
Plantaardig voer is duurzamer
The production of plant-based ingredients has a significantly lower environmental impact than meat production.
A recent study by the University of Nottingham examined 31 commercially available dry dog foods in the United Kingdom and compared the environmental impact of plant-based diets with that of meat-based diets on five points: land use, greenhouse gas emissions, acidifying emissions, eutrophying emissions, and freshwater consumption (Brociek & Gardner, 2025).
This showed that plant-based food had the lowest environmental impact on all five of these points. For example, the production of 1,000 kcal of plant-based food required only 2.7 m² of land use compared to 102 m² for beef-based food (Brociek & Gardner, 2025). The difference in greenhouse gas emissions was also significant: beef-based food emitted approximately 31.5 kg CO2 equivalent per 1,000 kcal, compared to 2.8 kg for plant-based food (Brociek & Gardner, 2025).
Calculated over the average lifespan of an adult dog (approximately 9 years), feeding a 20 kg dog with beef-based food would require an estimated 57 football fields of agricultural land, versus approximately 1.4 football fields for plant-based food (Brociek & Gardner, 2025).
At VerdaDog, we therefore consciously choose plant-based ingredients. Not only because this aligns with a hypoallergenic and fiber-rich diet, but also because it is demonstrably less burdensome for the environment.

Onze verpakkingen
We try to reuse shipping packaging as much as possible. Therefore, your order may arrive in a used but still sturdy box. This is a conscious choice to avoid unnecessary cardboard consumption.
Where possible, we minimize the use of plastic. For accessories, this may mean that the packaging sometimes looks different than you are used to, because we consciously choose alternatives with less plastic.
We do package our kibble in a fully plastic bag, rather than a combination of plastic and cardboard. This choice is well-considered: experience shows that cardboard-plastic packaging is less sturdy, more prone to tearing, and more susceptible to grease seepage. Torn packaging further along the supply chain increases the risk that kibble becomes unusable and has to be thrown away. From the perspective of food waste, sturdy, fully plastic packaging is therefore currently the better choice.
Digitaal en dichtbij
We do not print invoices and promotional material by default. We prefer to send these digitally and only print them when actually required.
We also produce our food in Europe. This results in shorter transport distances than production outside Europe, which contributes to a smaller ecological footprint for every bag delivered to your home.
